Botox is a cosmetic agent that reduces wrinkles. It is popular for its ease of application, its relatively long term results and of course the results themselves. Given the mechanism by which Botox reduces wrinkles, doctors are applying Botox to alleviate a number of conditions where relaxing the muscle tissue could generate a positive results. This includes things like muscle twitches and migrains.

COSMETIC USES for Botox: Botox is most often used cosmetically to reduce the look of expression lines like forehead lines, crows' feet, or frown lines. Botox can reduce these lines, giving your face a smoother, younger look. The results will show usually within a week following the 1st application and can last as long as 4 months.

Botox doesn't work on all types of wrinkles, so discussing with your doctor is paramount. Botox works best to ease the signs of aging caused by expression lines. It will not affect wrinkles caused by sun damage, smoking, or sagging skin related to gravity or weight loss.

NERVOUS SYSTEM APPLICATION: Botox is also used to treat eyelid spasms, which can be both cosmetically distressing as well as create a situation in which it vision is constantly disrupted due to the frequent blinking. Botox can reduce the spasms, improving the patients vision.

Cervical dystonia (CD, or neck spasms) may also be treated with Botox. CD can cause a person's neck to spasm uncontrollably, leading to chronically awkward and uncomfortable positioning of the neck and head. Botox injected directly into the neck muscles can ease the painful spasms for up to three months.

Botox can also relieve crossed eyes, another condition caused by excessively tight muscles.

SWEATING: Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) has been successfully treated with Botox as well. Sweating is caused by overactive nerves over stimulating the sweat glands. Botox can impede the nerve pulses and reduce sweating. Botox works to block the chemical impulses from the nerves, and the results can last nearly 7 months.

MIGRAINES: Botox has recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat chronic migraines. As many as 30 injections are delivered around the migraine sufferer's head and neck region, reducing the number of migraines by half the usual number per month for up to three months at a time.

SIDE EFFECTS: Botox when used as directed is generally considered to be very safe. Botox is relatively safe. The most common side effect is temporary bruising at the point of application. Some side effects can include dry mouth, some sensitivity at the injection site, headache, vision issues, fatigue and neck pain.

Major side effects can indicate botulism. Though rare, patients can experience loss of voice or inability to speak clearly, loss of bladder control, double vision, weakness and fatigue, difficulty breating or swallowing. Any of these symptoms requires immediate medical attention.
